The Pure Boland Market started in February 2009 when Tharina Marais saw an opening in the market for small businesses in the Breede River Valley area to sell their home grown and homemade products as well as handmade arts and crafts.
The Pure Boland Market at the “Groenstoor” in picturesque Brandwacht just outside Worcester, became a monthly favourite among locals and since then people came from all parts of the Western Cape to enjoy the local produce and delicious homemade food at this monthly market.
During the first few weeks of the Covid-19 pandemic / National lockdown level 5 in South Africa, Tharina and her husband Pieter realised that it might be ages before the market can be fully operational again, so they decided to take the market online. Today, the online market shop is the main platform for supporting these local small businesses and entrepreneurs.
Orders can be placed on the website. They stock a whole variety of local produce and homemade products from real local small businesses. Deliveries takes place twice a week and they deliver to a whole lot of areas in the Western Cape. More areas might be added soon, depending on demand.
Due to various requests from regular customers they have also added other fresh produce products, which is not available in their direct area. They buy them in fresh from agents at the Cape Town Market. This way, they can give their customers a much bigger variety of fresh produce. They still buy the bulk of their fresh produce directly from local farmers and try to rather support the smaller farmers where possible.
Before the current global pandemic, every first Saturday of the month, the Groenstoor in Brandwacht, served as the home of Pure Boland Market. With the most spectacular view over the Brandwacht vineyards and mountains, this is the perfect spot for your early morning cup of coffee, or stay for delicious ‘roosterkoek’ straight from the fire. You can even enjoy some local craft beer and wine, while listening to a local band performing back ground music.
Most of the products on the online market shop and more is available at the market days. It is a great way to meet the entrepreneurs in person, after ordering online and having their delicious products delivered to your door on a more regular basis than what the market takes place. The
market only takes place on the first Saturday of each month (except for January).
Currently the market only takes place when the lockdown restrictions allow for a fair amount of people to visit the market.
When Lockdown regulations allows, there is also kids entertainment at the market days, but to keep everyone safe, kids entertainment now only happens when the Covid-19 cases in the Western Cape is really low.
